The two-time Olympic gold medalist had a shaky qualification round on September 21 at the Nagoya General Gymnasium Rainbow Hall, with a couple of falls along the way. Even so, he still topped floor exercise with 14.600, edging South Korea's Ryu Sung-hyun and Japan's Shoma Tsukiyama. He also qualified 7th in vault and 6th in parallel bars, which means three individual finals for him.

What about Eldrew Yulo and Juancho Besana?

Carlos was not the only Yulo shining. His younger brother, Karl Eldrew Yulo, qualified 4th in floor exercise and 9th in horizontal bar. Juancho Miguel Besana also punched his ticket to the vault final after placing 4th in qualifying. The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines summed up the day on Facebook:

FINALS BOUND! What a powerful performance by our MAG Team on the Asian Stage! The boys fought hard and successfully secured their spot in the TEAM FINALS after finishing 6th in the Qualifications!
